Almost five thousand years ago it was much more spacious, greener and richer in water.
There used to be a row of dunes here, near the then coastline, in the middle of marshes.
A group of people appeared there around 2900 BC, undoubtedly with a dugout canoe.
They stayed in a shelter for a few days and ate a porpoise.
Not long after their departure, more people came to those dense dunes.
They built houses there, pastured cattle and sowed fields.
There were only a few dozen of them and they almost ruled the empire alone.
Almost, because they had contacts with neighbors further down the dunes, and with people far to the south, where the flint and stone tools they needed came from.
After a while, these early farmers from The Hague left again for an unknown destination.Archaeologists from the municipality of The Hague excavated and investigated the place where these people lived in 2011 and 2012.
Based on their findings, archaeologists Peter Stokkel and Evert van Ginkel have written a booklet about prehistoric life on the dune.
They reconstruct that life on the basis of vague soil traces and small pieces of flint and pottery, which come to life through beautiful photos and interactive pages.
Using a smartphone or tablet, the reader can call up moving images of making an arrow, sculpting a pot or chopping down a tree with a stone axe.
